Karma plays Cupid.
As our 21st wedding Anniversary is fast approaching Sept. 16th to be exact. I wanted to tell you how Karma in all her fickleness played Cupid. So settle in and get ready.
I first saw him when I was working at the store that shall not be named I was 17 at the time , there he was all tall and lanky with hair that curled around his ears. I gave him my biggest grin. He .. Ignored me. What gives I wondered. was it the ugly yellow smock I was wearing that my employer required us all to wear I mean granted yellow does not look good on everyone but still. I always smiled at him and his mom whenever they came into the store. I even offered to take their purchase out for them but as karma would have it they refused. I was bummed he was so cute. Oh well then I met someone I was a Sr. in High School by then I was head over heals in love with-M- I was hanging out with -M- and his best bud -J- when low and behold who should come pedaling up on a bike but the one that tall lanky , guy with the curly brown hair. -M- says this is Jerry he lives down the block from me. "Hi." I said he said "Hello" and then pedaled off.
By the end of my Sr. Year -M- had done the unthinkable he broke my heart. He broke up with me I was so sure he was the one. I know , I know the dreams of the young and horny.
Then the day that changed my life forever the birth of my baby bird. I was too busy to think of anything other than taking care of her and working. My sister Kelly and my friend-R- talked me into going uptown with them one day I was sitting in the back seat with Baby Bird who was happily cooing and being the cute 6 month old that she was. When -R-said " There is my cousin and his friend, let's stop and say Hi." They were both riding 10 speed bikes. They approached the car "Hey cousin and friend,Jerry . " -R- stated. The friend looked in the back seat " What a cute baby , whose baby is it?" "Mine." I snapped. "Okay." Jerry said and backed away slowly.
When my sweet baby bird was 9 months old my papaw passed away he had made me promise him that Baby Bird and I would move in with my Mamaw and take care of her so that is what I did. My friend -A- tried to fix me up with several guys but I refused all of them. I was just too busy and did not want to get involved with anyone who would not accept my daughter.I did try a few dates but they ended quickly because most of the guys wanted my undivided attention. I saved that from my daughter.
When my daughter was 18 months my friend -A- announced that she was getting married and gave me the honor of being her Maid of Honor. I was thrilled for my friend but a little bummed out I was still waiting for my one , my true love. -A- offered to fix me up with someone that worked at a local mom and pop store but I said "No, thanks I am tired of being fixed up. Fast forward several months later. -A- calls me she says " Come over I want to visit with you for a little while , since I am a old married woman now. " I go over. She greets me with a beaming smile . " Well she says guess what?. " I am pregnant!" " Congrats." I say . We visit a little more than she hands me a bottle of wine and says " Here I can't drink this anymore and I know it use to be our favorite so here so you can celebrate , our babies can grow up together and be friends like us. I was happy and excited for her. It was the weekend , so might as well drink this wine wouldn't want it to go bad I mean 3.00 wine doesn't last forever you know.
I left baby bird with mamaw and off I went alone, lonely and bummed. I ran into my friend -D- told her -A's- exciting news -D-said " Cool, how about you let me drive your truck and we can just hang out?" So off we go we meet up with this guy she has a crush on and we hop in his 4-wheel drive to do a little mud ridding. We spot a green car mud riding also?? "Oh." -D- says that is Jerry and my crush here's brother. Silly boys thinking they can mud ride in a car. " Silly boys stop and talk to us. 1st the little bother tries several very lame pick up lines on me. I told him to take a hike. Then Jerry comes up and says " I know you." I looked at him and wondered how he knew me.
"Well I know -M-. " My heart skipped a beat wow that has been a while. "What did he say about me?" I asked " Oh nothing much." Jerry said. We talked all night long he was like a friend he told me about have 4 sisters and 1 brother. He told me where he worked, the usual get to know kind of things. I told him how I remembered him from the store he told me how he remembered me from the day I had baby bird in the back seat of a car. But you see I didn't believe in love at first site. So when we parted for the night he gave me a quick peak on the cheek and said bye. Well I guess it could have been worse he could has just given me a handshake.
Several weeks later while I was just driving about town with -D- we run into Jerry . He flagged us down " Help he said this crazy girl is trying to jump my bones." We laughed and let him in the car off we went. No kiss for me at the end of the even just a sweet smile and a quick see ya. -D- Says" I think he likes you." " Ha Ha very funny. " I answer he won't when he finds out I am a mother."
More weeks pass and -D- and her crush drive out to my mamaw's and ask if I would like to ride to Monticello with them. " Sure I say, may baby bird join us." " I would love to have her join us." -D- answers. "But first we have to pick up Jerry he is helping my crush and my dad work on something." So we pick up Jerry. Baby Bird had just turned 2 and was talking every one ears off she told us all kinds of things and when we arrived she spotted her favorite thing in the world parked next to the store we were helping -D's- dad with .. a train. She loved them begged to be picked up by none other than Jerry? He was really tall maybe that is why.
That sealed the deal for me , but I wondered about him he gave me a shy grin and said I think you are OK. Can I date you? I just looked at him with my mouth open not knowing what to say no one has ever asked so kindly or sweetly before. " Sure I say but I have to tell you my daughter comes first." He slowly started to come over take us out despite the fact that baby bird took to him that first night but she did not like this person coming between her and her mama. One night as we were sitting on the couch watching t.v. she ran up to Jerry and proceeded to bite him on the knee. I was shocked. I asked Jerry if he was OK. He said "Yes , it didn't break the skin it is OK. I have a niece she has bitten me before it will be fine." He assured me. Another time baby bird spit on him, and she would squeeze up between us pushing, shoving her way in the middle of us look Jerry right in the eye and announce this is MY mama. Jerry would smile and say well " You are my baby bird."
He kept coming over she kept telling him that was her mama. He would also bring her and I little gifts donuts , hair bows , soda, a water gun. I gave her one donut but she begged and begged for another. "No to close to dinner time." I told her. As karma would have it my daughter's love could be bought for the price of a donut. Jerry gave in to the tears and handed her a donut she was his best friend after that and later that night she did the usual of squeezing in between us and looked me in the eye and said . " My Jerry."
Summer was coming to an end so we lay on the hood of his car looking at the stars baby bird ran circles around the car chasing firefly's. " I have something to tell you." I said in a shaky quiet voice. "I want to tell you something too." He said softly. " You go first." I said "I Love You." He said quietly. " That is what I wanted to tell you ." I said . " But I am scared." "Scared of being hurt, I was Raped by a ex-boyfriend , I am scared of loving you and you won't love me back. " I am scared because other than my daughter I have never felt a love like this before. " " We will take it slow. " He assured me.
Months later he proposed , 3 months after my Mamaw passed away. Jerry was right there with him through it all. Baby Bird and I had to move back home with my parents for a while and then.
On Sept. 16th, 1990 Tamara and I walked down the aisle to say I do. Right before we made that walk down the aisle she looked at me and asked." Does this mean Jerry will be my dad now."
